We will maintain a list of attendee arrival times and places to help you coordinate travel from the airports with other attendees. The spreadsheet will be on the internet and will include email addresses
of travelers. You need to email Jan Heckman your arrival time, and he will send you the web address of the spreadsheet.
One primary use of this list is to share car rental or limousine service to/from the Hilton Mystic Hotel.
If anyone has difficulty in arranging transportation (including dialing
800 numbers from outside the US), or with any other arrangements,
email Jan Heckman.
Below is an overview of transportation choices for the conference. These are points of contact to and from the Hilton Mystic Hotel.
Getting to Mystic, Connecticut
We highly recommend using T.F. Green Airport (PVD) in Providence for arrival. It is the closest airport (not international, you will have to get a connecting flight). On, Sunday, October 5th and Thursday, October 9th, there will be two 15-seat shuttles from/to T.F. Green. If you arrive at another airport see below for transportation options. For those close enough to drive, see driving directions.
Leros Point to Point Limousine from all area airports to the Hilton Mystic Hotel. Rates are based on 4 people per car. They will take reservations via phone (1-800-496-3811) or email, reservations@leroslimo.com,
and will try to fill cars to capacity which may mean people will have to wait
at the airport for awhile. But be forewarned if, for example, 2 people are at JFK Airport, and no one else is arriving within a "reasonable time", the cost of the entire fare will be divided between 2 passengers (ex: $235/fare for 2 equals $117.50 each.)

T.F. Green Airport (PVD) (Providence 50 miles from Mystic) strongly recommended -
Transportation options:
- Greyhound bus - use taxi or airport limo service to the Providence bus station (Tel: 1- 401- 454-0790). (See luggage details for more information).
- Train :
Use taxi or airport shuttle to reach the Providence Amtrak train station.
Rates and schedules: for the T.F. Green Airport Limousine Shuttle to the Amtrack train station ($9 one way - 2 pieces of luggage/person, extra charge over 2 pieces)
Groton/New London Airport (GON) (Groton, CT) - very small, connections available through PanAm and USAir. Approximately 15 minute drive to the Hilton Mystic Hotel.
- Taxi
- Rental Car - Avis (the only
agency with a counter in terminal), Hertz, (will
bring car to terminal), and Budget.
Bradley Airport (BDL)
(Hartford, CT, 63 miles from Mystic). Ground
transportation from BDL is limited. Rental car or limos are the only real options for transport to the New London/Mystic area. An intermediate option (not recommended) is a limo to the train.
Logan Airport (BOS)
(Boston, MA, 110 miles
from Mystic). Ground transportation
options are more extensive, but this is quite a distance from
Mystic and most transport will involve connections that are not convenient
or time effective. Connecting to train or bus service from Logan necessitates
getting from Logan to South Station. On this site, there are options listed for buses, but read carefully here for caveats, such as contacting the bus lines directly to ensure accuracy of the information which is subject to change.
Connecting from Logan to Mystic options:
- Limo/cab (see Boston Limousine
for information as an example), costing about $53 for a limo for up to 3 persons to the train station for a connection to Mystic via train.
- Bus (via the “T” subway— see below). The Logan website lists 6 companies running bus service to South Station , but be careful because Bonanza does not offer Logan to South Station bus service anymore. One option says that Dartmouth Coach runs from “New London”, but be aware that this is New London, New Hampshire, not New London, Connecticut. See also Greyhound Bus.
- Subway For a nostagic journey on the oldest "underground" in the US. try the MBTA subway (affectionately known as the “T”) which runs from Logan to downtown Boston, where connections are available to South Station. There is free shuttle bus service between the airport terminals and the ‘T’ (MBTA Blue Line) Airport subway stop. Travel to State Street, then switch over to the (MBTA Orange line) to Downtown Crossing. At Downtown Crossing switch over to the (MBTA Red Line) and get off at South Station
See, subway map for help to South Station, from which Greyhound and Amtrak operate, each with connections to Mystic, Connecticut. This is a lot of switching and hauling of luggage (up and down underground levels and on/off of crowded subway trains).
- Amtrak Train (via the “T” subway—see
above) from Boston South Station to New London, Connecticut, Union Station. See Amtrak destinations and schedules, times, & prices.
New York City airports, La Guardia (LGA) & John F. Kennedy International (JFK)
(Approximately 120 miles from either NYC airport
to Mystic) From here, connect to downtown New York City then:
- Train: Amtrak (Penn Station) or Metro North (Grand Central);
see Train links for further schedule information. Metro North is recommended as better in terms of on-time performance, although a connection to Amtrak in New Haven, Connecticut needs to be made to travel to New London.
From New London, see local taxi information.
- Bus and limo options also available from
either airport web site (see also Ground transportation options from airport
links above for each).
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) (Newark, New Jersey,
approximately 140 miles from Mystic and on the other side of New York City from Connecticut)
See website for transportation options
In general, however, travelers
would need to connect to either a limo (pricey) or train to get to Mystic.
Train options include connections via:
- Train: AirTrain fares to Newark Penn Station
(to connect to Amtrak) are $6.80-$8.10 for the
5 min ride, or $11.55 to NYC Penn Station (another Amtrak connection) for
the slightly longer ride.
- Bus: Olympia Airport Express shuttle bus which provides transport to NY Penn Station (Amtrak
connections), or Grand Central Station in NYC (for Metro
North connections). All are either $12 one way or $19 round trip, with the
round trip valid for 60 days after purchase of ticket.
- Limo: Limo to train from airports (JFK, Laguardia, Bradley, or Newark)
Leros Point to Point Limo - direct to the Hilton Mystic Hotel
Connecticut Limousine from JFK,
Laguardia, Bradley, or Newark is a last resort. Note: travelers must get to New Haven, Connecticut to catch a train along the seashore to Mystic. Fares vary ($51 one way from JFK/LGR, $34 for
Bradley, $63 for Newark. Investigate the round trip options which are a better
value if you qualify for using the tickets within the valid time frame).
Getting Around
During the conference -
- There are numerous restaurants and local attractions within walking distance of the Hilton Mystic Hotel. We will have a restaurant guide available at the conference.
- Rental cars are the best option for getting around town.
- Mystic Aquarium, Mystic Seaport and Seamen’s Inn are within walking distance or by taxi.
- A shuttle will operate in a loop of Mystic each evening of the Conference.
Getting Home
Most arrangements made to get here are simply reversed, unless pursuing other
travel options while in the area. Some coordination of rides back to airport
will need to be done.

Luggage restrictions on buses:

though the amount charged per extra piece of luggage varies greatly from company
to company (Greyhound has the highest I've seen, at $15 per extra piece!). Check
on this if your travel plans include extra luggage.
