Proceedings of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute

The 64th Proceedings of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute will be available for distribution in October. As I do each year, this is to announce to IAMSLIC member institutions that the 64th Proceedings of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute will be available. Many IAMSLIC libraries have had on-going subscriptions to the Proceedings, but I feel it prudent to ask if they would like to receive the current volume.

As in the past, the subscription rate is $US90.00 which includes postage and handling (domestic and international). An electronic version (CD) of the Proceedings is included with the hard copy.

If the library affirms their interest by contacting me (LeRoy Creswell, creswell@ufl.edu), I will send them the GCFI Proceedings and CD, along with an invoice. Alternatively, they can simply place an order online at the GCFI website (www.gcfi.org).

Kind regards,
LeRoy Creswell

Direct Links to USGS Publications Changing by September 1, 2011

The U.S. Geological Survey's Publications Warehouse (pubs.usgs.gov) will
complete a process to migrate all of its' on-line publications into Portable
Document Format (PDF) files by September1, 2011. At that time, the USGS will no
longer support the previous DJVU format for its on-line publications. Libraries
and Web site managers shouldlink to the publications citation page for USGS
publications. At sometime after September 1, 2011, direct links to DJVU files
will stop working and there will be no automatic redirect to the PDF version of
those materials.

A direct link to a USGS DVJU file currently looks like:
http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/djvu/B/bull_1967.djvu
Once loaded in PDF, individual publications will have a link like this:
http://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1967/report.pdf

However, the preferred link to this publication is:
http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/b1967

The citation link is the preferred link because it may include links to plates,
maps, appendices, etc. as well as links to the USGS Store to purchase paper
copies if they are available. This migration has been sought by members of the
research community for some time. The DJVU format offered many benefits at a
time when bandwidth was a challenge. The PDF format offers a consistent format
for both historical and current publications and it allows users to download and
use information from USGS publications in the same way that they use research
journal articles and other scientific research products.

Over 70% of all USGS-published reports are available in an on-line format from
the USGS Publications Warehouse. The system currently includes citations to over
100,000 research articles, reports, and products produced by the USGS over the
last 130 years. The system also offers an RSS feed to keep users of earth and
natural science research informed about the products of the USGS.

“Marine Mammal Science” continues to leave things out of the print edition

Well it wasn’t a one-time thing.  Continuing the precedent it set with its April issue, the July 2011 issue of Marine Mammal Science has 5 e-articles and 3 e-note listed in the table of contents of the print issue.  This constitutes 40% of its content no longer being published in print format, the same as the previous issue.

Annual Resource Sharing Summary

In July of each year, I collate and summarize the resource sharing statistics from the IAMSLIC Distributed Library project. 2010/11 represents the ninth complete year of the resource sharing program. A total of 5310 requests were submitted during 2010/11, the highest volume of activity recorded to date. A total of 33,486 requests have been submitted via the system since its inception in 2002.

The resource sharing program continues to be broadly international in scope, with 73 different IAMSLIC lending libraries in 23 countries receiving borrowing requests from 124 IAMSLIC libraries in 47 countries, similar to previous year’s numbers, but with a modest increase in the number of libraries that submitted borrowing requests. 36 (49%) of those 73 lending libraries are in the United States and they received 66.7% of the total requests, a much larger percentage than in recent years, which have averaged close to 60% from U.S. member libraries.  Libraries in Germany, Australia, Mexico and Canada collectively received 26.2% of the borrowing requests.

The Alfred Wegener Institut in Bremerhaven (Germany) regained its status as the top lending library this year, followed by the Hatfield Marine Science Center of Oregon State University (U.S.) , the University of Hawaii (U.S.),  Hopkins Marine Station (U.S.), and the Pell Marine Science Library at the University of Rhode Island (U.S.) .

The Latin American region continues to make active use of the resource sharing program while contributing a substantial amount of lending in return, including an significant percentage of requests filled within the region. A growing number of EURASLIC libraries are active users of the system, both lenders and borrowers. EURASLIC still conducts much of its regional interlibrary loan activity via its discussion list, so the number of transactions via the Distributed Library does not reflect the full volume of resource sharing in the region. The volume of activity has begun to increase  in AFRIAMSLIC and remains moderate in the Pacific region.

The complete set of data is available on the Distributed Library website via the Resource Sharing Statistics link at http://library.csumb.edu/iamslic/ill/. It includes a spreadsheet for each year that offers charts and additional analysis of lending and borrowing patterns. I encourage you to look at the 2010/11 numbers and will be glad to answer any questions you may have about the data.

MLibrary launches project to identify orphan works

With funding from HathiTrust, the University of Michigan Library Copyright Office has begun work to identify orphan works – works that are known to be in copyright, but whose rights holders cannot be identified or located – in HathiTrust’s growing repository. The goal of the project is to provide concrete data on the number of orphan works in HathiTrust, which could be used in the creation of legal or policy-based frameworks to allow broader access to orphan works for scholarly and research purposes. The official press release is available on the University of Michigan Library website.
