HMS Data Sets now searchable in Stanford’s online catalog

There is now a record in the Stanford library’s SearchWorks catalog for the Hopkins Marine Station data sets that have been added to the Stanford Digital Repository. In addition to using the link below to see a list of all the records, you can search for things like “elephant seals” to find individual data sets.

More Hopkins Marine Station data added to Stanford’s Digital Repository

I have now deposited 7 data sets from Hopkins Marine Station into the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR). The latest three are marine mammal counts for the sea otters, harbor seals, and elephant seals that are off the beach in front of the Miller Library. You can read about them on the SDR blog at:

FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Branch Library closed from February 2014

Dear colleagues,

We regret to inform you that, as per high-level managerial decision, the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Branch Library will be permanently closed from February 2014 with its staff and collections moved over to the FAO’s central library, the David Lubin Memorial Library (DLML). After settling down in DLML and along with new duties, we will continue providing specialized fisheries and aquaculture information services to our internal and external library users. Maria Kalentsits will act as “fisheries focal point” in the Main Library, while Armand Gribling will continue to look after the collection of documents published by and stored in the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department. We will also continue our involvement in IAMSLIC activities, including hosting the IAMSLIC Conference in 2015 in FAO.

Starting from February 2014, you are kindly asked to send you reference queries to FAO-Library-Reference e-mail account FAO-Library-Reference@fao.org  instead of FI-library account.  Please note that the FI-library account will be permanently closed after a transition period of a couple of months. For other issues, please contact Maria or Armand directly.

We apologize for any inconvenience or delay in addressing your requests during the transition period.

Finally, we would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to all partners and users whom the Fisheries and Aquaculture Branch Library was privileged to work with over more than 45 years of the library’s existence at FAO.

Best regards,

Maria Kalentsits and Armand Gribling

Greetings!

Here is a brief update on IAMSLIC activities before the holidays (I know the lucky ones have escaped already).

Thank you to everyone who has agreed to serve on an IAMSLIC committee, board or regional group. Your participation is invaluable and much appreciated!

Membership renewal time is here, and Kristen LaBonte and Barbara Butler are busy processing lots of checks, credit cards, and bank transfers. We are still looking for two additional members for the Membership Committee. Please let me know if you are interested.

We have signed a new two-year Memorandum of Agreement with UNESCO/IOC to continue our cooperative efforts in the field of marine information management. Of special note is the creation of the new Joint IODE/IAMSLIC GEMIM (Group of Experts on Marine Information Management); increased technical support for the Aquatic Commons; and additional support for members from developing countries to join IAMSLIC and attend conferences.

We have signed an agreement with ProQuest to index the publications in the Aquatic Commons within ASFA and other relevant ProQuest products. This is an exciting development that will increase of the visibility of the Aquatic Commons.

The Conference Planning Committee led by Program Chair Guillermina Cosulich and Local Host Mary-Clare Ame are already hard at work on the 40th IAMSLIC Annual Conference to be held September 14-18, 2014 in Noumea, New Caledonia. We are looking forward to their announcement in the new year regarding the conference theme and proposed topics.

I wish you all a joyous season filled with peace, love and laughter.
Happy Holidays to all!

Sally Taylor
IAMSLIC President 2013-2014

Report on typhoon in Philippines

I contacted Stephen Alayon from SEAFDEC/AQD via email to see how he and his library fared in the recent typhoon that swept through the Philippines.  Many of you met Stephen at this year’s IAMSLIC conference in Florida.

I am happy to report that he along with his family and library staff are all OK, and his library was not damaged.

I tried to do some translation into English (without any guarantee)…

Have fun!!

Marcel

Library’s anthem

If you as a human being are standing at the window

And you are centering on yourself again

Go out, go your way

Go into the Library

Chorus:

Book food, new land

Library and expertise

Book food, new land

Library and expertise

Break:

Thinking, counter, databases, classroom, library ticket, ebooks

Silence, text book, systematics, truth, curiosity, chairs

If we lose or win

If we are thinking all alone or all together

For education and future

Library, meeting place

Chorus:

Book food, new land

Library and expertise

Book food, new land

Library and expertise

Break:

Displays, chances, library busses, tables,

Self checkout,

Books, opacs, entertainment, long time preservation

Digitized object, digitized object, digitized object, digitized objects

Online catalogue, online catalogue, online catalogue, online catalogues

Chorus:

Book food, new land

Library and expertise

Book food, new land

Library and expertise
